Lake Elmo offers a perfect solution for those seeking a rural home environment that is still close to city conveniences. Its roots trace back to the Township of Oakdale, which was founded in 1858. In 1878 a subdivision plat was filed, naming in Elmo Park, and the lake next to the plat was referred to as "Lake Elmo."  Finally, in 1926, Lake Elmo became a separate village.

Area residents have fought to retain Lake Elmo's rustic character. Most of the housing is single-family homes on larger parcels of land, typically 3.5 to 20 acres and all but a few of the city's homes have private wells and septic systems. Farming still survives and cornfields are a common sight in the community.

The Lake Elmo Regional Park Reserve, 3M's Tartan Park, and the many city parks provide the recreation for its residents.

Lake Elmo expects to remain primarily a bedroom community. The city's residents are active volunteers and have a strong sense of community. Lake Elmo residents enjoy the best of two worlds. Easily accessible to the Twin Cities by Interstates 694 and 94, they are not far from the amenities of the city, but they call the country home!
