Maplewood is conveniently located east of St. Paul and is just ten minutes from downtown St. Paul. Incorporated in 1957, its charm, strong residential neighborhoods and thriving commercial development make it an ideal place to live and work. Maplewood shares borders with St. Paul to the South, Roseville and Little Canada to the West, Vadnais Heights and White Bear Lake to the north, and North St. Paul, Oakdale and Woodbury to the east.
The city covers approximately 11,500 acres (18 square miles) of land consisting of a mix of residential, light and heavy manufacturing, commercial, industrial, 10 lakes, open space and park lands.

A 40-acre wildlife sanctuary offers 1-½ miles of scenic trails that wind through ideal habitats for birding and wildflower walks. A 620-foot floating boardwalk and observation decks let visitors get close views of waterfowl, muskrats, turtles and aquatic vegetation.
The city has a well-developed business community including a major regional retail mall and the world headquarters for 3M, a major international company.
